Jill- I love all of your posts and photos. I'm getting ready to move to Korea to teach. I have a Canon Rebel XS with two lenses, an 18-55 mm and a 55-250 mm, both with image stabilizer. I'd like to get a third lens, but don't know which to choose. I'd like to have one that has a nice zoom, but can also take pictures that are closer as well (like someone in the same room as you). What do you recommend? I can't find the post that says what lenses you use!
Hey Allie! Congratulations on your upcoming move! I'm sure you'll love it here in Korea! What kind of zoom are you looking for other than the one's you already have? The ONLY zoom we even own is a 70-200mm and it's REALLY heavy (and over $2000) and will probably only come out when we're doing weddings! We actually prefer to use our 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm which are not zooms. I wish I could be of more help to you, but I really don't use zooms very often and I have a NIKON, so the lenses are different from Canon's! My best advice would be to look at some of the google and yahoo chats about Canon zoom lenses. It'll give you a good gauge on what people think of each lens and what they use it for. :) Hope that helps. <3 Jill
Thanks for the response Jill. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing (because the one I do have is a pretty good zoom). Is there a lens that you would recommend that has a different focus than a regular lens? Something that you can focus on your subject, but everything else be blurry? Or can you do that with a normal lens and I just haven't figured it out yet?

Ah, okay, now you're talking my language! :) For photos to look focused on one object and blurry in the background, you need a VERY low F stop. That's the "f#". In order to take that type of photo, you'll need at least an f-1.8 lens. I'd recommend getting a 50mm f1.8. If you can't find one now, you can wait and get one in Nampodong (the old downtown shopping area in Busan). It'll only run you about $50.00 secondhand, which is a steal for a great lens. I use mine ALL THE TIME! :)
